Cannot Remember the Last Time You Cleaned Your Grease Trap?
How Does One Perform Grease Trap Repair and Cleaning?
Grease traps were created to do exactly what the name implies, that is to trap the likes of grease, fatty oils, and sludge, in addition to separating the oil from the water. The substances will pass through a system, this gives them time to cool down and solidify, and the water will simply pass through the drain as usual. However, these systems have to be maintained regularly in order for them to work effectively. When this is done properly, it can save you money by not calling in a professional
service.
Gently remove the lid from the grease trap using a pry bar. Make sure you do this slowly because there are gaskets located just beneath the cover. Should you damage these, you will have to replace them. Check the grease trap’s parts once you have removed the lid. You will be removing, cleaning and replacing parts during the cleaning process, so you must remember where the components are located and how exactly you have to install them properly. For the best results, draw a diagram of the interior of the trap so you can refer to it during the re-installation process.
Insert a measuring stick in the grease trap, and slowly guide it to the bottom, after which swirl it lightly so the grease and oils have put a mark the stick. This will act as your guide on how much debris is in there. Scrape the lid and sides down of the trap. Remove any big pieces of fat or oil which stubbornly sticks to the trap. In order to achieve a cleaner trap, try using a wet/dry vacuum to remove any smaller bits of debris.
Then, clean the lids, sides, and parts using soap and room-temperature water. If necessary use a steel scrubber to remove any leftover waste or odor. Rinse the screens and parts with water. Then re-install the grease trap parts by looking at your diagram. Replace the lid once everything has been secured. If you are in need of a professional
